We have to be careful where we place our links. What we think as a method that can drive traffic to our articles may turn out to be disastrous!
Just recently, I have received a private message from the InfoBarrel administrator asking me to remove the links coming from the site Sirgo.com going to my InfoBarrel articles. Sirgo is a site where members can create and write short articles and are allowed to place YouTube videos, referral links, amazon links, affiliate, etc.
Now, it turns out that InfoBarrel considers Sirgo as a low-quality site and the risk is that Google may see links coming from the said site to be low-quality or spammy.
InfoBarrel is linked to Google Adsense and shares revenues with its writers. It was also mentioned in the forum that link-building is against Google Webmaster's best practices. Buying backlinking services from freelance contractors has turned into a grey area as well.
In order to avoid possible penalties from Google due to low-quality links, those articles that were linked back to InfoBarrel from Sirgo need to be removed. Thankfully, I didn't have many articles on Sirgo and I was able delete all links requested.
